Episode 264: Archeologists of a Bygone Age

Play Now!

Perhaps for the first time in human history, we people can now buy things more easily than we can fix them. Repair shops have become a thing only on television, even though so much of value could be repaired. I spend most of this Episode 264: Archeologists of a Bygone Age, planning my next big repair.

Hand Tool Rescue's fascinating vise repair!

In this episode, I play: Pee Wee Herman bemoaning the presence of so many large posteriors; Senator Ted Stevens noting the tubular reality of the Intertubes; and, with great thanks, The Post Apocalyptic Inventor so elegantly summarizing the current situation of our built environment.

The Post Apocalyptic Inventor bringing a wise introduction.

(I also referred to but did not play a video maker taking apart his own shredder.)

Just for fun, check out John's ultimate wood splitter!

Musically, I play: Jahzzar doing "Studie I". Mr. Ceglowski opened the show backed by KMFDM's "Attak," and I close with Mistle Thrush.

  1. 3d printer owner here. Out of its box, it's printed various items over the last few years mostly repair related. I don't print vases, toys, Tchotchke or geegaws which seems to be what most people use them for. The prints are somewhat hampered by materials available for FDM printing. I have access to a better printer at work if needed and if you need metal I have access to turning, milling and Laser cutting. Unfortunately not all products are easy to repair, some companies go out of there way to make it at best unaffordable if not physically impossible.

    1. Thank you, Industrial Dysfunction! When I get to the through prototyping and actually get some stuff modeled in CAD, I will reach out.

In the mean time, though, do you have time to answer some newbie questions about CAD? If yes, can I reach out through email?

      TIA,

      —Jim

    2. Hi Jim I thought I had an address for you somewhere but can't seem to find it. Im happy to help anyway I can with CAD, still using it daily and have been using it professionally for way too long. Currently I spend my time on Inventor and a bit of fusion at work, freecad to punish myself for home jobs.

    1. I am? Oh. I think I've always heard it pronounced as if the "a" were "ah". Wouldn't be the first time my local accent betrayed me!

Oh, and "Perpentious Listener"?! Well done, Sir or Ma'am!
